Whether you are making smudge sticks to use in a smudging ceremony or just as a refreshing chemical free incense. It is incredibly easy to create your own. I have a white sage bush that has survived many moves and climates. As long as I repot it in spring it always a great producer. Traditionally smudging uses white sage but over the years(and some OMG never again experimenting I have learned which herbs and plants I like the smell of. Rosemary and lavender are my go to year around. I have added a little oregano in the winter months for a earthier scent. It is really up to you to try out what is in your garden, some “weeds” like dandelions are fantastic smelling after dried.
I recommend embroidery thread, white, it seems to burn the fastest and cleanest. This is where I got mine ( Cotton Embroidery Floss Pack 8.75 Yards 36/Pkg-Primary Colors ) If you can’t get that a cotton sewing thread but it is going to be harder to tie everything up.
Traditional smudging ceremonies are done as a pray to clear your space of any negativity or stale energy- like when you rearrange you furniture and it like “wow I don’t know why I didn’t do this sooner.” I use smudging partly for that, after I have cleaned I will smudge the area. After years of doing this I think my brain has connected the smell with fresh and “ahhh.”
Now most will use an shell to catch the ashes, I have broken too many so I now just use little clay fire dish or in a pinch those shallow mason jars.
